Sometime in September, I walked into a high school in London and saw different colourful posters on the wall. The one that stuck out for me, was the one that said, ‘some people are gay, get over it.’ It made me laugh at first and then it caught my undivided attention when I found about eight more of the same poster all over the building. I walked to the notice board and read how people were bullied and some attempt suicide because they cannot live with the pain of what they go through because of who they say they are.
As I read the statistics of gay people around the world and their different stories of suffering I started to wonder what the big deal really was. Why, for the love of God’s green earth is it easy to hate people so much?
Just so we are clear, I am not gay (or is it lesbian) but I don’t have a problem with people who think or say they are. It’s not my place to start trying to straighten out what they believe is a predisposition. It’s not my place either, to help God by quoting scriptures to make the person who says they like the same sex, get it right. My own life is complicated as it is, and daily, I try to figure things out and there are many things about me, a lot of people will like to straighten out.
This doesn’t just go for gay people. It goes also for people who are considered weird (and we are ALL weird). Some are quiet, some are loud, some are skinny, others are fat, some rob us of our natural resources, other call themselves activists and stand to fight a cause, some are short, others are tall, some like plenty makeup, Brazilian hair, fake asses and boobs, others prefer to be natural with no make up. Some go to church, some go to mosques, and some doubt the existence of a supreme being.
Why in the world can we not just leave people the hell alone?
I read news online sometimes and wonder the kind of things that make the news. “…Some actress had a baby… another announced they are gay… one snatched another one’s husband, a married man and married woman were expelled from camp because they were caught having sex… And my question is SOOOOOO???
I think, as humans, we will not always get it right. We will miss it more than once. We will fall but should rise again. A wise woman once said, ‘we are the only species known to destroy our own habitat.’ How much sense does that make?
I don’t believe our job on earth is to be perfect, I think it is to be human. The more we loose touch with our humanity, the more twisted things get. If we stop to think, we would soon realize we are fighting the wrong battle. Hating and killing ourselves will only continue to hurt us and the dead circle will continue to thrive if someone doesn’t pick some brain and stop the madness.
HATE continues to thrive because we see other humans as less than ourselves. How else does one shoot, bomb, stab, rape, poison or rob other humans that are just like them? LOVE is what will heal our world. And the love I speak of here is not the ones you see on TV and music videos, it’s the kind that says, ‘I may not understand you but we are not all that different and I will help as much as I can.’
The truth is, humans have a huge potential to be good. We are not perfect and we are downright evil sometimes but one man, woman or child at a time, we will get this ship back on track.
So, next time you hear someone is gay, weird, Christian, Muslim, Atheist, or whatever term we come up with, LET THEM BE!
Cheers to the freaking weekend y’all ;)
